What we collect, why, and how you stay in control.

Last updated: October 10, 2026

We are updating this policy for the new OwnBite. Until the new version is published, this page lists only what OwnBite does today. Questions: privacy@ownbite.com.

You own what you post

Your recipes, photos, posts and diary stay yours. Download or delete them at any time.

No data resale

OwnBite never sells or rents your personal information.

Payments stay with Stripe, Apple and Google

Card details go straight to Stripe on the website, or to Apple or Google in the app. OwnBite never sees or stores your card number.

What we collect

  • Account information: name, email address, a confirmation that you are 18 or older, and the profile details you choose to add
  • Your kitchen settings: your goal, dietary preferences, allergies and any optional nutrition targets you set, plus a record of the consents you give
  • Your food diary and food scans, including the photos you scan
  • What you post or save: recipes, photos, versions, comments and collections
  • Your messages to the AI coach and the meal plans and recipes it makes for you
  • Subscription and billing status (payment details are handled by Stripe, Apple or Google)
  • Technical data needed to keep the service running and secure, including error reports and page-speed measurements

How we use it

  • Run your account and show what you post to the people you share it with
  • Keep your diary, scans, allergies and kitchen settings private to you, and use them to shape your own suggestions
  • Run the AI features you choose to use (food scans, the coach, meal plans and recipe ideas)
  • Look up nutrition facts and recipes for the foods you search or scan
  • Find and fix bugs and slow pages
  • Keep the community safe: review reports and enforce the community guidelines
  • Answer support requests and meet legal obligations

Who processes it for us

  • Supabase stores your account and what you save; Vercel hosts the site
  • Google Gemini, Google’s AI service, receives the photo or text you submit to an AI feature (a food photo, an ingredient list or a coach message) with the details that feature needs: kitchen settings such as your allergies, diet and saved pantry items for recipes; the nutrients you are low in for a meal plan; and for the coach, your recent food diary, goals and body details such as weight and age, wellness check-ins (sleep, energy, hydration, stress), nutrient status and saved coach notes. On plans that include it, the coach also reviews your recent diary once a day to update your coaching plan. The app asks before the first time anything is sent
  • Spoonacular, a recipe data service, receives the recipe searches you make and the filters you pick (diet, cuisine, meal type, time and the foods on your Leave out list), and which recipe you open, not your name or email. We keep its recipe data for at most one hour and never store it with your account
  • USDA FoodData Central, the U.S. government’s public food database, receives the names of the foods a food scan found, to look up their published nutrient values, not your name or email. Nutrition for the coach, AI recipe ideas and the dish directory comes from OwnBite’s own copy of this data, so those lookups are not sent to USDA
  • Open Food Facts, an open database of packaged food products, receives the barcodes you scan, not your name or email
  • Sentry receives error reports and performance measurements
  • Stripe handles payments and card details on the website
  • Apple (App Store) and Google (Google Play) handle payments in the iPhone and Android apps; RevenueCat receives your OwnBite account ID and your App Store or Google Play purchase records so we can confirm your plan

How you control it

  • Delete a post, recipe, photo or diary entry at any time
  • Download a copy of your data from You › Settings › Your data
  • Allow or turn off AI features at any time in You › Settings › Your data; when they are off, nothing is sent to Google Gemini for AI features
  • Delete your account from You › Settings › Your data. Deletion is immediate and permanent: it cancels a subscription you pay for on the website and removes your data, so download a copy first if you want one. A subscription bought in the App Store or Google Play must be cancelled there
  • Or write to us and we will export or delete your data for you

Retention

What you save stays in your account until you delete it, delete your account, or ask us to remove it.
